GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Swinney Conservatory of Music at Central Methodist University invites applications for a full-time Director of Bands/Professor of Music Education position with an 11-month contract to begin in July 2025.  Rank is commensurate with experience.  Applicants with a completed doctorate will be placed on the tenure track. Candidates must be committed to a career of excellence in teaching, performing, advising, and mentoring.   Review of applications will begin April 1.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Organizing and rehearsing the marching and concert bands

·         Teaching music education courses and supervising student teachers

·         Teaching music lessons or other music courses as necessary

·         Advising music majors

·         Organizing and leading annual marching band festival and the spring Band Tour

·         Travel as necessary for recruiting and Band Tour

·         Assisting CMU Admissions Staff with outreach

·         Participating actively in appropriate state, regional, and national professional organizations, as well as community groups.

MANAGERIAL/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Bands supervises two student Band Fellows (work study).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Evidence of successful public-school teaching is required. Master’s degree in music or music education is required and a doctorate is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

·         Frequently stand for at least two hours consecutively.

·         Operate classroom technology.

·         Speak loudly and clearly enough to be understood by students.

·         Demonstrate marching techniques, instrumental playing techniques, and conducting.

This is an 11-month position and has a required minimum of 24 hours of academic load per year. Overload can be negotiated. This position will require weekend and evening hours based around concert schedule.
